Australian Parliament

Australia’s Parliament has two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Each electorate elects one MP to the House, while the Senate has 12 Senators per state and 2 per territory.

How it Works

Australians vote for MPs in the House of Representatives and Senators in the Senate. The party (or coalition) with the most seats in the House forms the government. The Senate reviews and votes on laws passed by the House.

Who Can Vote

To vote in the federal election, you must be an Australian citizen aged 18 or over and enrolled with the Australian Electoral Commission. If you're unsure about your enrolment status, you can check or update your details on the Australian Electoral Commission website.
